Following the death of their mother Sarah Winbourne as young children, Jordan tries to protect her little sister Ashley from their abusive father. After Jordan grows up and goes away to Penn State, Ashley moves in with Aunt Tanya.New parish priest Pastor John delivers a sermon in front of Reverend Michael. Afterward, Reverend Michael chides Pastor John for reading one of his demonology books without permission.Ashley explores the abandoned house where she and her sister grew up. Ashley runs into her old friend Hannah, who invites Ashley to a party with other friends from childhood.At the party, Ashley reacquaints herself with Shane Stevens, who had a crush on Ashley when they were kids. Hannah conducts a séance with everyone using an EVP app on her phone. Ashley experiences haunting visions of her dead mother Sarah.Ashley and Tanya separately experience various instances of paranormal activity inside their home. Pastor John introduces himself to Ashley when he notices her in town.After Ashley has another haunting experience during her first day at school, Hannah comes over to conduct another séance in front of a mirror. Although the two girls attempt to contact Hannah's mother, they end up seeing a demon's reflection before Tanya interrupts them.While Ashley sleeps that evening, Tanya experiences a vision of flames consuming Reverend Michael. Tanya also flashes back to her sister Sarah behaving strangely and talking about voices making her do bad things while she was pregnant.Ashley has a nightmare of the demon stalking her in her sleep. The next day, Ashley begins behaving as though possessed.Ashley skips school to go to the lake with Shane. Ashley seduces Shane and then painfully bites his tongue.Tanya finds Ashley entranced in her foul smelling bedroom with her face covered in blood. Tanya rushes Ashley to the hospital. Dr. Carraz diagnoses Ashley with only a bloody nose. Dr. Liles prescribes an anti-depressant and sedative for Ashley.Reverend Michael and Pastor John have a personal discussion about faith.Hannah is frightened away from Tanya's house when she sees the demon in Ashley's window. On her bike ride home, a car strikes and kills Hannah.At mass, Ashley suddenly starts contorting and becomes possessed in front of the congregation. Ashley collapses. Reverend Michael warns that what happened to Sarah is now happening to her daughter and Ashley must remain on hallowed ground. Distrustful of the priest because he could not save her sister, Tanya insists on taking Ashley home.Reverend Michael gives Pastor John a crash course in how to perform an exorcism.Dr. Carraz comes to Tanya's house to check on Ashley. By the time Reverend Michael and Pastor John arrive, Tanya and the two priests discover Dr. Carraz dead at the foot of Ashley's bed.The two priests sedate Ashley and bring her to the church with Tanya to conduct an exorcism. During the rite, Ashley breaks Reverend Michael's wrist and escapes into nearby woods.Tanya follows after Ashley. Ashley attacks Tanya as the two priests catch up. Pastor John escorts Ashley back to the church while Reverend Michael helps Tanya recover. When Reverend Michael and Tanya return to the church, they discover that Ashley violently murdered Pastor John.The next day, Tanya calls Jordan to come home.
